Harmonic, Melodic, and Functional Automatic Analysis

چکیده
This work is an effort towards the development of a system for the automation of traditional harmonic analysis of polyphonic scores in symbolic format. A number of stages have been designed in this procedure: melodic analysis of harmonic and non-harmonic tones, vertical harmonic analysis, tonality, and tonal functions. All these informations are represented as a weighted directed acyclic graph. The best possible analysis is the path that maximizes the sum of weights in the graph, obtained through a dynamic programming algorithm. The feasibility of the proposed approach has been tested on six J. S. Bach’s harmonized chorales.

Interactive Melodic Analysis
In a harmonic analysis task, melodic analysis determines the importance and role of each note in a particular harmonic context. Thus, a note is classified as a harmonic tone when it belongs to the underlying chord, and as a non-harmonic tone otherwise, with a number of categories in this latter case. Automatic systems for fully solving this task without errors are still far from being available...
متن کاملAutomatic Melodic Reduction Using a Supervised Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar
This research explores a Natural Language Processing technique utilized for the automatic reduction of melodies: the Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar (PCFG). Automatic melodic reduction was previously explored by means of a probabilistic grammar [11] [1]. However, each of these methods used unsupervised learning to estimate the probabilities for the grammar rules, and thus a corpusbased evalu...
متن کاملAutomatic Composition of Melodic and Harmonic Music by Answer Set Programming
The composition of most styles of music is governed by rules. The natural statement of these rules is declarative (“The highest and lowest notes in a piece must be separated by a consonant interval”) and non deterministic (“The base note of a key can be followed by any note in the key”). We show that by approaching the automation and analysis of composition as a knowledge representation task an...
متن کاملA Classification Approach to Melody Transcription
Melodies provide an important conceptual summarization of polyphonic audio. The extraction of melodic content has practical applications ranging from content-based audio retrieval to the analysis of musical structure. In contrast to previous transcription systems based on a model of the harmonic (or periodic) structure of musical pitches, we present a classification-based system for performing ...
متن کاملClustering Symbolic Music Using Paradigmatic and Surface Level Analyses
In this paper, we describe a novel automatic cluster analysis method for symbolic music. The method contains both a surface level and a paradigmatic level analysing block and works in two phases. In the first phase, each music document of a collection is analysed separately: They are first divided into phrases that are consequently fed on a harmonic analyser. The paradigmatic structure of a giv...
